BOTOX THERAPY

Botox Injections

It’s one of the world’s most popular cosmetic treatments from young moms to stress-cadet CEOs.  It’s a must-have in Hollywood, and we all probably know at least one person who regularly has it.

Its popularity is thought to be due to the fact that it is an alternative to more invasive surgical procedures as well as the fact that it is now widely available to buy.  It’s consistently the most popular minimally-invasive cosmetic treatment in the world!

So, what’s all the fuss about?

We’ve all heard of it.  But how many of us know what Botox is?  It’s not a new treatment, as it has a proven track record of success, and people know that it’s relatively safe and effective as it’s not an operation performed under anesthetic.  Patients can also go home immediately afterward.

Botox is short for Botulinum toxin and is injected into muscles in your face to smooth out lines and wrinkles.  It relaxes the muscles and comes in a liquid form that, once diluted, is injected into the muscle to relax the area over a period of about ten days.

After the injections, your facial muscles will slowly freeze up in a day or two, with the final results being noticeable in about a week.  Its frown smoothing effects can last for up to about 12 weeks before gradually wearing off.  People seem to be using Botox as more preventative rather than waiting until they are older and lined with wrinkles.

Botox is seen as preserving the skin and stopping lines developing as Botox softens and temporarily freezes the muscles, which means the treated area will stay flat.  Botox is preventative rather than restorative, the younger you have Botox, the better.

What can it do?

Botox is a drug made from a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, which is also present in many natural settings, including soil, lakes, forests, and in the intestinal tracts of mammals and fish.   Botox is safe nowadays and has very few side effects when used in a therapeutic context.

However, doctors today also use it in small doses to treat health problems, including:

  • Temporary smoothing of facial wrinkles and general improvement of the appearance
  • Severe underarm sweating
  • Cervical dystonia – a neurological disorder that causes severe neck and shoulder muscle contractions
  • Blepharospasm – uncontrollable blinking
  • Strabismus – misaligned eyes
  • Chronic migraine
  • Overactive bladder
